The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology of Kerman, was officially founded by Dr. Hossein Sandgol in 1983. Before this, courses in Physiology were first taught by an Iraqi lecturer whose wife was originally from Kerman, and later by visiting lecturers from Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Initially, Dr. Sandgol only presented theoretical courses while practical courses were presented by  R. Kasho Anand who was originally from India. In 1986, Dr. Hamid Najafipour (who had completed his MSc. in Physiology at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences) and Dr. Mozafar Rezvanipour (who graduated from Veterinary Medicine in 1986) joined the group; after this, theoretical and practical courses of Physiology were fully presented to the Paramedical groups (the School of Nursing and Midwifery as well as the School of Healthcare were founded in 1980 and 1984, respectively).

Dr. Sandgol was the first to establish the Master’s Program of Physiology. Once the Medical School was transferred to its current location in 1990, the first research laboratory of the department entitled Cardiovascular Research Laboratory was established in 1994 by Dr Najafipour, for which two physiographic systems were purchased to which other systems were added later on. When Dr Sandgol was transferred to Tehran University of Medical Sciences, the Master’s Program of Physiology was temporarily canceled but it was reopened in 1996 and has been accepting students ever since. In 1999, the Ph.D Program of Physiology, established by Dr. Hamid Najafipour, accepted its first student who was actually a joint student between Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Kerman University of Medical Sciences. When Dr. Mohammad Khaksari was transferred to Kerman University of Medical Sciences from Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences in 2002, the Department began to accept Ph.D students in its own Ph.D Program of Physiology – which was also the very first Ph.D program established in Kerman University of Medical Sciences at the time. In 2018, this Department began to accept students in the Ph.D Program of Exercise Physiology. Currently, the faculty consists of an honorable Professor, 6 Full Professors, 4 Associate Professors, and 5 Assistant professors that present different courses in the Master’s and Ph.D Progams of Physiology.
